Here’s a little fall color inspiration from our recent trip to Lewes, Delaware about two hours away from Philadelphia. We love the garden gate and pop of blue the chairs provide.

Sadie is starting to feel better. Lily has lost a tiny bit of weight. The combination means that our dogs are friskier than ever. The cool, crisp Philadelphia days are energizing them…
Lily is sleeping off Sadie’s grumpy disposition. She needs a lot of rest to deal with the grumbles, the rawhide stealing ways, and the peanut butter hoarding tactics of her little pal.

Here is Part 2 of our two part series on Sadie rules Lily, from an upside down position on Lily’s favorite chair! Sadie really is too much!
Sadie has a lot of spicy techniques for managing Lily. As you can see, Lily is not amused - but she does play along!
Italian Meatball and Barley Soup
Ingredients
3/4 pound ground beef
1/2 cup pecorino romano cheese
2 eggs
2 slices dry whole grain bread, without crusts
2 tbs chopped/dried parsley
1 tbs chopped/dried oregano
1 tsp crushed red pepper
1/2 tsp salt
1/2 tsp pepper
1 chopped red pepper
1 chopped onion
3 chopped carrots
2/3 cup barley
1 tbs olive oil
How to make the soup
Step 1. Dice 1 onion, 1 red pepper and 3 peeled carrots.
Step 2. Saute onion, pepper and carrots in 1-2 tbs of oil on medium-high to medium heat. Add diced or dried garlic for flavor. Add 8 cups water when all ingredients are soft. Turn heat to medium-low.
Step 3. Mix 3/4 pound ground beef, 2 slices cubed dry whole grain bred (without crusts), 1/2 cup pecorino romano grated cheese, 2 eggs, 1/2 cup water, 1 tbs parsley, 1 tbs oregano until ingredients are completely integrated.
Step 4. Add crushed red pepper, salt, pepper to taste into meat mixture.
Step 5. Make mini meatballs from ground beef mixture.
Step 6. Add meatballs one at a time to soup.
Step 7. Add 2/3 cup barley to soup.
Continue to simmer until barley is soft.
The Fairmount Dogs can eat the meatball portion of the recipe!
Serves 8.
